I'm just entering the market for an HDTV.  Initially I've been looking at Mits' line and upon some advice from friends and a very helpful salesmen, I've narrowed my choice down to the Mits WS-55411.

My viewing distance is about 10 feet, but right now I live in an apartment so that could vary, so I thought the 55 would be most flexible for future rooms.

I was initially weary about how fast the CRT technology would "fade out" or be replaced by some of the newer technologies currently out there.  Price is an issue, so these newer techs just aren't in my range right now.

I'm open to any suggestions anyone has for other models or sets to compare, as well as any other input you guys can help me with.

I also may purchase a surround sound system, so any advice on that is a bonus.

Thanks alot for the help

Tad,  Sounds like you've done your homework.  I wouldn't worry about technology passing you by...it's going to happen anyway.  Seeing as you are on a limited budget...buy the set that you like the best and feel comfortable with.  You will find every brand and model just about supported by one member or another on this forum.  I hear a lot of good things about the Mits sets..I of course don't have one..I have an RCA but I bought big and early and it had what I wanted and it's picture is fantastic and I'm very happy with it.

As for surround sound systems, there are so many to choose from....plan ahead with enough power for whatever room you will need to fill.  Sometimes size and power isn't all that matters...with 5.1 and the other formats 1 very important thing (especially if you are like me and are a SciFi junkie) is get a powered sub-woofer...it will add a whole new dimension to your viewing....and yes go the 5.1 or better route...even with mediocre speakers, if you have a complete surround system, you'll be in 7th heaven.

Welcome to the forum and look forward to hearing what you purchase and how you enjoy it.

PS....don't worry about CRT technology...if you do the research you will find that LCD and Plasma still can't compete for resolution with CRT's...unless you are willing to spend 25k or so.

Thanks for your help Gregg.  Yes, I have been doing a bit of research and seem most comfortable with the Mits line.  I just wanted to make sure I wasn't narrowing my choices too early, without looking at all possibilities.

With all the choices out there for both HDTV's and surround sound systems, it can be a bit overwhelming, which is why I came here for the advice.  Thanks.
