We were all treated to about half of what we should have seen last night for the Grammy's.  CBS 58 please use the full HD bandwith and stop simulcasting the garbage on the other two sub channels.  It was quiet evident everytime there was any fast movement, and the overall clarity was nothing compared to what is possible with HD.   Are we going to see the same sub par picture in a few weeks when the NCAA's are going?  I for one really hope not.

Thanks,

Shawn

I second that motion.....the other channels become almost unwatchable.

Sorry to be uninformed, but what other channels are you talking about.  I have TWC and I'm not quite in tune yet with all the details of multicasting, etc.

On the OTA (over the air) signal they have 3 programs running at the same time on their signal .  They have the 58 (cbs) feed in HD that is on 1-1(also known as 58-1), then they have channel 41 on 1-2 and channel 63 on 1-3.  TWC receives the feeds for 58HD and 41 off this signal (no fiber from TWC to 58).  So 58 shares the bandwidth for their HD signal with the rebroadcast of 41 and 63.  Hope this helps you understand.  So instead of having the full 6MHz of RF spectrum...which is about 19Mbs of data space for HD..they usually run somewhere around 12-15Mbs for the HD channel...the higher rate on sports...but when they do that the broadcast of 41 suffers...so basically the TWC feed for 41 suffers....So we all suffer that we don't have the full bandwidth of the channel for full HD...usually shows up in artifacting on large amounts of motion. So sitcoms are no problem..but sports have problems.

Hope this helps you understand.

Just when I would agree on eliminating multicasting, I was glad we had it last night so I could watch the Wisconsin vs. Michigan game.  (go Badgers!)  All I have is OTA, so I guess I could have switched to analog and picked it up that way.   Just easy to pick the digital multicast 41 and watch the game.  I think the picture quality is better.

I do hope when an "event" like the NCAA playoffs occur that they give more band-width to 1-1 during the duration of the event.

What kind of things do they usually show on the other channels?

Tom Snyder

63 is Spanish/Telemundo.
41 is mostly syndicated programming, but often carries sporting events like Badger Football and Basketball, and an occasional local high school game.
