I have an RCA HDTV with the built in HD decoder-tuner.  I also have a Road Runner subscription thru Time Warner and as an "experiment" (I know...bad, bad ;) I simply used their supplied Y connector on the cable that went to another room and plugged the feed into my TV antenna "A" input. Hey, I'm paying for the signal that they put through there...

I can get all the basic channels, but my question is: is it possible to get any of the cable channels in HD this way without their box?

I get the local digital HD channels fine thru the airwaves.

There's a thread like this on the other forum, but no one has really answered this question.

Forgot to add that nothing on the Cable feed is coming thru in HD.

No it takes digital cable and their decoder box.....cable hd is in 256qam format...hence you need their box to decode it down so you can display it on your set.  The cable format is different than the over the air format.

All off-air retransmitted HD is available on the Digital Basic tier (lowest).  Right now it includes NBC-4, PBS, ABC-12, CBS-58.
A set top converter is required because the modulaton scheme is 256QAM, not 8VSB.  Right now, the only set top in use converts everything to 1080i on the component outputs.

I thought that the new Mits "Promise Module" has all the necessary hardware and firmware to provide a cable-direct connection without a STB. I am pretty sure that is the case. Check out AVS Forum, under HDTV Hardware, and there is a lengthy thread regarding the PM.
I am sure that manufacters will be implementing this technology on most TV's very soon.
