HD VS SD Demo on the this Site

For Demonstration Purposes I will be doing some screen grabs of the SuperBowl.  I will be recording the entire game in HD and will grab some screen shots from that...but in addition I will be grabbing some screen shots in SD.  These JPEGs will become a valueable demonstration device when we post them on this site.

Here's why....visitors to this site who don't yet own HDTV's actually have a way to see the difference right now...it's not like trying to watch an ad on TV...Duh..you can't see how much better HD is because you're watching it on an SD set.  BUT....Most persons have a better display on their computers than the quality of their TV's.  Thus when you view a SD shot on the computer vs a HD shot ...you actually have a monitor with enough resolution to see the difference.

So stand by and we'll try to get those shots up here on Monday of next week.

In case you didn't see my post under the technical section where people were having problems with overscan....the above link will take you to some snaps I made from Sundays broadcast.  They will come up as thumbnails but you can click on them to make them larger and again to make them even larger.  The full pictures are about 125k each.

those pics are off tv or computer monitor?

Gregg Lengling

Those are snapshots of the data being played back.  The viewing software for the HiDTV Pro card allows you to take snapshops of a programs.  I'll add a couple of analog versions from a couple months ago on channel 6 that I did for some friends (they are in the pictures).  I especially like the one we call the "Smoking Head"

can you explain why most of us had problem with seeing time. What is the problem?
:bang:

It seems that many RPTV's (mainly Mitsubishi's) have an overscan problem.  My 61" RCA showed the perfect picture just the snaps I uploaded.  I don't understand why they have overscan...are they afraid you might be able to see the edge of the screen without any image.  It would seem to me that overscan would create a perspective problem...no longer 16:9 but 15.9:8.9????

gregg, how many hrs. can you record with hidtv. And is it based on hard drive space. Not really familiar with that pro card stuff.

Gregg Lengling

It's based on Hard Drive space....just under 10 GB per hour of High Definition Transport Stream (that means everything...video, 5.1 audio, PSIP....everything in the the stream).  So my Secondary drive (80 gigs) is good for a little over 8 hours of HD content.  The card however can interface and control a DVHS deck and you can record on there instead.  I'm just hoping in the near future high-density recordable DVD format for computers/dvd players comes to fruition.

I do have the JVC HM-DH30000 and it works great, just interested in learning about different options available.1 more question though:Do you have to record off computer(internet)like titan tv,and if so how long would it take to record a 1hr. show, and does it work with dialup, cable and dsl?

Joseph S

TitanTV is used for sceduling by some PVRs. It does nothing but help in deciding when to record and when to stop recording. It doesn't work well on the HiPix now, but you can schedule your own recordings in the HiPix app. Thus, no internet connection is required.

It takes 1hr to record 1hr. (1:1 ratio) The HiPix is 8GB's an hour similar to the HiDTV mentioned above. I've now accumulated an absurd amount of HD space, yet it's never going to be enough. My next step will be to get a quick swap External Firewire HD case so I can quickly grab a cheap HD to dump or archive data without all the hassles of unscrewing this or that. There's something like 600GBs in my HTPC  now and it just doesn't cut it since ABC refuses to put Alias on DVD and CSI comes out in P&S.
