Well, I want to say that I have finally read and comprehended every comment in this thread.  All of you make me proud to be involved here.

Rees-- #3 (don't step in#1 or #2....) and a little #4.

QuoteKudos to cbs/ch 58 for the lack of station logos floating in the corner of my screen.
Like the MNF packer game?  That bug was more annoying to me than the loss-- most of the time, 2 bugs.

Regarding the 6 points (of light?) #5, that doesn't sit well with me either.  You brand an identy, this to me is a childish act.  I respect and know you as ch 58, My set remembers where it was when I turn it off and on.  My request (and to any other stations that thing this is a good idea, or cute)-- knock it off.  You're insulting my intelligence.  I know where to find you.

#6, expense-- yep, the business model is full of nothing but red now.  Suck it up, you got the broadcast spectrum for nothing.

#1-- Gregg is the guru of ERP, probably could find this info if I searched.  All I can say is it's better than FOX (400 watts I think?? Or is it 1500 watts??  I forget, let me look at my hairdryer....)

Lastly, I get CBS-58 very well here.  Although it has taken me a lot of effort and a lot of help from others here.  I've scrutinized every device in my OTA setup, spent money on stuff that's now collecting dust as I refined and learned what worked.  All for this thing we call the HDTV bug.  No WISN, not THAT bug :p

I, too, had taken a peek at the Badger game during the playoff game and it was godawful.  Tonite, however, since I can't get 41 on DirectTV, I viewed it on the OTA to see a good performance by the Badgers.  It was, to my eyes, a very good, clear, no artifacts picture, much better than the standard espn bball game.  I forgot to look at what was on 1-1, but I've got to assume they weren't allocating as much bandwith to that as to 1-2.  If it weren't for the multi-casting for this game, gosh, I would have had to go to a different room to watch the badger game.

The trend is quite clear with regard to Ch 58:

1. low power transmitter
2. directional antenna not designed for their coverage area/power level
3. taking forever getting on Time Warner cable
4. taxing their hd feed by multicasting 2 additional sd channels
5. using non-standard virtual channels 1-1, 1-2, and 1-3.  Creates confusion.  What will happen when and if they go cable?
6. electric bills are being paid by their competition using high power.  Their claim of too expensive is a smoke screen.

Amazing timing!

Well we can place a check mark on #3 now.  But of course this thread had nothing to do with it.  Did it?

whooooo hoooooo - congrats cable guys

But hmmmm, is the fiber feed before or after the statistical multiplexing gear?  In other words if they crank down the bandwidth OTA on 1-1, will cable still get full bandwidth or the same as OTA?  Be on the look out.

Now I wonder how long it will take for the other 5 items in the list to be resolved?

Six minutes left in the fourth quarter and the picture just went to hell. It's actually kinda funny when 2 out of 3 frames are skipped, unless it's just my setup????

GJC

Didn't see any frames missed viewing on TWC with the 3100HD STB.  I too am curious if the TWC feed is before or after the multicasting.  Or can the fiber handle a full bandwidth HD feed plus 2 SD feeds?

About the game tonight, I was very impressed.  Blown away even.  Even my sister-in-law was amazed.  There were a few glitches:

1. After the CBS logo sweeps the screen (after a replay usually), the live game is pixelated for a fraction of a second, but clears up quickly (I believe this was mentioned from last weeks games as well.)
2. Not all cameras were HD or at least not widescreen.  Shots from on the field switched to 4x3.
3. Some cameras better than others.  Possibly some upconverting from non-HD cameras going on?
4. Late in the game I noticed a big glitch, but very brief.  Two square chunks of the screen went out of wack.  Only lasted a second or two.
5. When switching camera angles, screen would get scrambled briefly.

Unless I don't know what I'm looking for, I never saw any motion artifacting or missed frames.

Thanks again CBS and TWC for getting this done!  You may even pick up several more viewers for programming broadcast in HD.  I know I watched most of CBS' line up on Friday night just because it was in HD.  I had never watched any of those shows before.

Remember, Jim Hall said that there isn't a fiber feed to TWC.  They are picking the signal OTA.  They also do this for the TWC feeds of ch 41 and ch 63.  That is why they are multicasting.  I just wanted to provide the correct infomation.  Currently the only stations with a fiber feed to TWC are WTMJ and WMVS/WMVT.

Thanks for the correction.  I did see Jim Hall's post after I put the above post up.

ALL in All I thought yesterday's playoff game came in better than the week before.  Kudos to 58 for making the necessary adjustments.  What a great looking picture, I'm finally enjoying something that I layed out all this money for.  On to the SUPERBOWL next week!

Gregg Lengling

Actually Ron you have almost 2 weeks until the superbowl...but don't fret it'll be there.  As for WDJT I talked with Jim on Sunday and they were on the ball as they now very carefully change the bandwidth during Sports to give 1-1 about 25% more bandwidth on their channel than normal and reduce the bandwidth on 1-2 and 1-3..hence much better pictures and less compression.  Also kudos on Jim and his crew for all the work they do to provide this HD programming for us and others.  (Just a note:  Remember that they have to keep the multicasting up as TWC receives 1-1 and 1-2 for rebroadcast on the cable system as there IS NOT a fiber link from 58's studios to TWC.)

Correction Gregg, Superbowl is in 6 days, January 26!!!
http://www.superbowl.com/

The NFL has rearranged the schedule so there we don't have the week off between the end of the playoffs and the Superbowl.

I stand corrected...guess I'm still lost from that week in Jamaica earlier this month...time to turn the pages on my calendar...I'm a week behind..forgot to flip them when I got back.  Oh well my first mistake of the year.  Now my birthday is this Thursday instead of next Thursday....I'm making the 1/2 century mark a week early...guess I don't get a week off either.

Gregg, I'm getting freaked out here.  Way too many similarities...

We have the same birthday, both work in RF, I work in Cedarburg, you live in Cedarburg, both like HDTV...  What else?

I watched the game last night on a Mits 65 inch set and to be honest it was not very good.  I'd give it a C at best.  There were many artifacts and the picture lacked depth and clarity.  The set belongs to my brother so I know its capabilities and the game did not use them.

I think the Jim Hall and his people are doing the best they can with an unusual situation.  I just hope that some day they can stop the multicasting and give us true HD.  Here's hoping that the ABC picture is better.

I think the expression is:  "What were you smoking?"  Seriously, something must have been wrong with his setup.  OTA, on 50" plasma, was about as good as it gets!  Thought that fan in the shoulder pads with silver spikes was going to reach right out the screen and grab me!!
