Jim Hall GM CBS58 - March 20th, 2002

Todd W says, Hello, all ... welcome to tonight's chat with Jim Hall from CBS58.

JIM HALL says, SORRY I WAS A LITTLE LATE GETTING ON...TONIGHT I AM LOGGED ON FROM HOME

JIM HALL says, SHOULD BE A GOOD NIGHT TO CHAT...NO HD ON CBS TONIGHT

Todd W says, We're ramping up on the folks here, Jim. No problem.

Todd W says, ... and Survivor is over !! :)

JIM HALL says, DO WE WANT TO WAIT A FEW MORE MINUTES TO LET OTHERS GET ON LINE OR SHOULD WE START

Gregg L says, go for it

Todd W says, First question ... Jim, could you please go to transparent logos on the local stuff for us RPTV types ?? ;)

JIM HALL says, I AM NOT SURE I UNDERSTAND YOUR QUESTION.....

Todd W says, On the local newscasts, the 'bug' or logo is bright and in high color with a potential to burn our rear-projection screens.

JIM HALL says, ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT YOUR LOGO IN THE LOWER RIGHT HAND CORNER

Todd W says, Yep.

JIM HALL says, IN A HALF HOUR SHOW WITH COMMERCIALS EVERY 7-8 MINUTES ,...IDEALLY DON'T THINK YOU ARE GOING TO GET A BURN

JimB says, will the range of your hd signal be the same as channel 58 is now, I live in Fond due Lac and wonder if I would be able to receive the hd signal

JIM HALL says, JIM B ...STAND-BY

JIM HALL says, TODD...HAVE WE CAUSED YOU A BURN.....

Todd W says, No. I'm just overly concerned. No burn, but always worried about my 'baby' ;)

JIM HALL says, UNDERSTANDABLE......YOU HAVE SPENT A GREAT DEAL OF $$$, WEE WILL COME BACK TO THIS QUESTION OF BURNING IN JUST IN A SECOND BECAUSE THERE IS SOMETHING YOU ALL SHOULD BE AWARE OF IN HD

Todd W says, Ok !!

JIM HALL says, JIM B...YES OUR DTV SIGNAL WILL COVER THE SAME AREA AS CBS58 ANALOG, BUT.....

JIM HALL says, AT THIS TIME WE ARE TRANSMITTING AT A REDUCED LEVEL

Eucker says, What %

JIM HALL says, CAN YOU PICK US UP NOW OR ANY STATION FROM MILWAUKEE WTMJ OR PBS

JimB says, at this time I haven't invested in any equipment

JIM HALL says, LIVING IN THE AREA BETWEEN MARKETS IS GOING TO BE GREAT ...I THINK ...FOR DTV VIEWERS...BECAUSE THEY WILL PROBABLY GET TWO TO THREE MARKETS...

JIM HALL says, I JUST RECEIVED AN E-MAIL THIS WEEK FROM A PERSON IN NORTHERN IL AND HE GETS US EVERYDAY

Todd W says, <-- Hoping for Chicago and Madison as soon as the weather clears.

Gregg L says, But being on Lake Michigan, I'm not looking forward to tropo enhancement from Michigan and Indiana ruining my local signals.

JIM HALL says, DOES ANYONE OUT THERE NOW WHAT OUR TRANSMITTING ERP IS CURRENTLY

Gregg L says, Probably around 100K

Todd W says, Help ... ERP ?

rnelson says, ERP Enterprise Resource Planning System?????

JIM HALL says, ANYONE FOR WHAT ERP IS

Gregg L says, Effective radiated power

JeffByk says, Effective RMS Power?

JIM HALL says, THAT'S CORRECT GREGG

Todd W says, <High5> Gregg !

JIM HALL says, HOW ABOUT TPO

Gregg L says, I cheat though it's on all my FCC licenses

Gregg L says, Transmitter power output

Todd W says, Whew ! A ringer !

JIM HALL says, CORRECT.....OUR TPO IS BETWEEN 800 WATTS TO 1,000WATTS

Eucker says, Jim, What % of power are you at?

JIM HALL says, AND WE ARE RUNNING JUST SOLID STATE PA'S

JIM HALL says, OUR ERP IS ABOUT 11.7KW

Gregg L says, Mosfet or bi-polar or some newer device

JIM HALL says, GREGG.....I DO NOT KNOW...WE ORDER THE BOX GOT IN AND HAVE NOT HAD TIME TO REALLY GET INTO THE GUTS OF THE STUFF...MY CHIEF PROBABLY KNOWS HOWEVER

JIM HALL says, WHEN WE RAMP UP TO FULL POWER OUR ERP WILL BE 1,000KW

JIM HALL says, BY COMPARISON...OUR CURRENT ERP FOR 58 IS 5,000KW

JIM HALL says, PER THE EXPERTS....TO COVER THE SAME AREA LESS POWER IS REQUIRED...AND I THINK THEY ARE CORRECT BASED ON WHAT WE HAVE NOW SEEN

JeffByk says, You are operating at 1.2% of your planned ERP???

Todd W says, ... and good on the ol' electric bill ...

JIM HALL says, I ALSO THINK THAT THE POTENTIAL FOR FUTURE INTERFERENCE IS PRETTY HIGH

Gregg L says, I was present for the initial 8VSB tests using 36 at 5% power and they received it just fine at Zenith in Chicago, so I anticipated that Jim

Gregg L says, On VSB analog the FCC had offsets on the carrier freqs. to reduce interference of stations on the same channel. How do they handle that on DTV?

JIM HALL says, WE COVERED THE POWER ISSUE LAST WEEK AND THE REASON WHY...BUT FOR THOSE NEW IT HAS TO DO WITH SEVERAL FACTORS......

JIM HALL says, ELECTRICAL POWER BILLS......NO ADVERTISING REVENUE.....NO MASS NUMBER OF HDTV SETS

len says, you can tell TV's and VCR's that you are on channel 58, NET 10, why can't you tell the receivers that you are broadcasting 1080I, 720P, or 480P, etc.

Eucker says, Jim, That is a chicken/egg thing! Put the Masters on HDTV and people will sell HD sets!

JeffByk says, At such low power and rec'ving in N. Illinois. Why would you ever need to go to 1000KW?

JIM HALL says, I CAN LET YOU ALL KNOW THAT WE HAVE INSTALLED A SIX INCH LINE ON OUR TOWER FOR RAMPING UP IN THE FUTURE SO WE ARE SET AND OUR TRANSMITTER JUST NEEDS THE HIGH POWER CABINETS FOR FULL POWER...SO WHEN IT MAKES SENSE WE ARE READY TO GO TO FULL POWER OR IF THE FCC TAKES THE ANALOG BACK OUR OLD POWER CABINETS FOR THE 58 BOX CAN BE PUT INTO PLACE FOR THE DTV SIDE

Gregg L says, That's right when you showed those to me after the new tower was built you told me they were ready for digital.

JIM HALL says, WE WOULD GO TO FULL POWER TO TRY AND FILL IN THE VOIDS...AS I AM SURE THERE ARE SOME AND TO EXTEND THE CLIFF EFFECT

JIM HALL says, THE MASTERS WILL BE IN HDTV.....

Eucker says, YES!!!!

Gregg L says, AMEN corner.....

Eucker says, Said like Marv Albert!

JIM HALL says, LEN .....CAN YOU RE-STATE YOUR QUESTION

len says, most of my clients do not know what they are watching, (format wise), why don't the receivers identify the signal they are receiving?

JIM HALL says, OKAY...I THINK I UNDERSTAND.....LETS SEE IF I CAN ANSWER.....

JIM HALL says, I AM SURE THEY REALLY NEED TO KNOW...THE SETS ARE SMART RECEIVERS BASED ON THE SYNC DATA THEY ARE RECEIVING, BUT THAT SAID.....

JIM HALL says, WE HAVE FOUND ONLY ONE MONITOR THAT POPS UP THE SCAN DATA AND THAT'S A SONY BROADCAST MONITOR 13 TEST TYPE THAT COSTS SOMEWHERE AROUND $6.5K......

DMan says, Hi Jim, will HDTV be on cable?

JIM HALL says, LEN......YOUR IDEA IS A GOOD ONE AND IT CERTAINLY COULD BE IMPLEMENTED INTO THE SETS, BUT ITS A MANUFACTURES CALL

Todd W says, Len, my Mits 55819 shows the broadcast format when you push the info button. 1080i, 480p, etc.

len says, I wish they all did!

JIM HALL says, DMAN......I WILL ANSWER YOU SHORTLY.....LETS GO BACK TO THE BURN IN QUESTIONS BECAUSE IT CONCERNS ME WITH REGARDS TO CURRENT DTV AND HDTV OPERATIONS......

DMan says, OK thanks :)

JIM HALL says, ANYONE OUT THERE KNOW THE CURRENT DANGER FOR BURN FOR THE HDTV SETS?

Todd W says, ok.

Todd W says, 4:3 on the 16:9 ...

kjnorman says, or 2:35 on 16:9 or 4:3...

JIM HALL says, CORRECT...4X3 PICTURES ON 16X9 THAT WE FORCE AND YOU GUYS CANNOT CHANGE.......WHY IS IT A CONCERN

len says, go Todd

Gregg L says, Shouldn't be if the bars are black, correct?

Todd W says, black bars fire all guns on the edges.

kjnorman says, Because we do not burn the side phosphors at the same rate.

JIM HALL says, YOU GUYS ARE ON THE RIGHT TRACK ...BUT NOT YET

kjnorman says, I had a 28in widescreen set from 1995. Within 3 years it started to show burn.

Tom Snyder says, My Toshiba has a warning when you turn the gray bars (default) to black

JIM HALL says, HERE'S A HINT......YOU ACTUALLY WANT THE GUNS ON......WHY?

Todd W says, uneven burn ?

JIM HALL says, TODD.....CLOSER.....

kjnorman says, My 41in w/s Sony - got in 1999 - showed no sign of burn, but this had gray bars. My old Philips with burn had black.

Todd W says, Ok. Too much on the 'picture area' none on the black ?

JIM HALL says, THAT'S WHAT I WOULD EXPECT KJ

Gregg L says, Good thing I paid for the 5 year extended warranty

JIM HALL says, LAST HINT........THIS IS WHY SETS ARE SET TO OVER SCAN

kjnorman says, The phosphor consumption is greater where there is active picture. Eventually there will become a faint line where a 4:3 picture ends on a 16:9 set.

JIM HALL says, PRETTY CLOSE KJ.......THE REASON IS THE GUNS ARE TURNING ON IN THE MIDDLE OF THE SCREEN FROM BLACK AND WHEN THEY HIT THE PHOSPHOR AT THAT POINT ITS FULL FORCE AND CAN CAUSE THE DISTINCT LINE IN THE MIDDLE OF YOUR SCREEN........

kjnorman says, But a 4:3 picture on a 16:9 set does not overscan at the sides...

JIM HALL says, ITS NOT BAD IF ITS NOT LEFT ON ALL THE TIME, BUT FOR EXTENDED PERIODS R...REALLY EXTENDED IT COULD CAUSE A SCAN LINE BURN

Todd W says, Jim, will you be adding 'graphics' like CBS is during the 4:3 portions of their HD broadcast ?

JeffByk says, Thus the reason gray bars are better.

rnelson says, My RCA Scenium has Gray Bars when Watching a standard station, but Black when watching a HDTV Picture in 4:3

JIM HALL says, CORRECT KJ...BUT THE GUNS ARE OFF AND THEN TURN ON IN THE MIDDLE OF YOUR 16X9 RASTER......

JIM HALL says, RNELSON...THAT'S GOOD BECAUSE GRAY MEANS THE GUNS ARE ALL ON BUT A T EQUAL STRENGTH

rnelson says, I do not get gray when watching HD Channels in 4:3.

Kevin A says, Will you stick with black bars on the 4x3 or go to gray?

JIM HALL says, THE PROBLEM IS WITH WHAT EQUIPMENT WE HAVE WHEN WE UPCONVERT OUR NTSC TO SDTV IN A 1080I FORMAT 16X9.....WE HAVE TAKEN CONTROL

kjnorman says, I agree. The guns hit the phosphor and they emit photons of light. There is only so many photons. Eventually they deplete over time, and the intensity of the tube fades. Obviously, if you are not using part of the tube for much of the time, those intensity levels will be different.

Gregg L says, Like the Outer Limits, do not try to adjust your TV as we have control.....boy I knew this was going to happen.

JIM HALL says, TIME FOR A SURVEY FROM USERS..........

kjnorman says, That all said, I am not worried about burn in of station bugs. However I do not like station bugs and would hope not to have then at all...

JIM HALL says, WE KNOW THAT THIS IS A PROBLEM AND WE NEED TO SOLVE WITH OUR EQUIP. REPS......THE SIDE BARS NEED TO BE SOMETHING OTHER THAN PURE BLACK, BUT NOT GREY.....ANY SUGGESTIONS?

kjnorman says, Purple? Only kidding...

Todd W says, Liked the image that CBS put up last weekend, Jim.

Tom Snyder says, Can you do graphic like the networks do during commercials;\?

Gregg L says, At least give us control like we do on NTSC channels, where we can make it a full or fill screen .

JIM HALL says, TODD ...YES, BUT I THOUGHT THAT WAS TOO BUSY.

Kevin A says, NBC used blue bars and that looked fairly neutral.

Todd W says, Perhaps, but I like the concept.

DMan says, bluescreen sidebars

JIM HALL says, CANNOT DO IT GREGG WHEN WE ARE 1080I 16X9

len says, move your logo to the side bars

kjnorman says, Blue would be better than gray. Imo.

Gregg L says, Just make everything on CBS in 16x9 HiDef and I'll be happy

Todd W says, How about a gradient, like HDNet used during the Olympics.

kjnorman says, I would not be keen to see the logo in the side bars

kjnorman says, I think the logo would become annoying.

kjnorman says, Hurray to Gregg

Gregg L says, No Logo, it would be like being on Yahoo and having to shuffle through the madness of ads to see the program

JIM HALL says, I THOUGHT WTMJ/NBC HAD NICE BARS IN THE OLYMPICS...WE WON'T DO LOGOS, BUT I CANNOT CONTROL WHAT CBS DID...EXPECT MORE IN THE NCAA WHEN THEY LEAVE THE GAME SITE IN HD AND GO TO THE STUDIO WITH UPCONVERT

Todd W says, Can you specify based on hardware, Jim ?? Is this an easy fix ?

kjnorman says, I guess that if you are covering sports in 4:3, you could push the picture to the side and use the remainder of the 16:9 space to put stats on the game or the players. That would be nice.

Todd W says, Nice, Kerry, nice. Like that.

JIM HALL says, GOOD IDEA KJ....I AM SURE IT WILL FIND A USE LIKE THAT OR FOR SPONSORS LOGOS......

rnelson says, You could also show close up images in small side bar windows.

Gregg L says, See as there are few viewers on 1-1, why don't you put my company logo in the side bar for free until you get some more viewers.

JIM HALL says, WE ARE WORKING WITH THE REPS ON WHAT WE CAN DO....HOPEFULLY IT WILL BE A SOFTWARE OR FIRM WARE UPGRADE......

len says, or advertise what you are doing on the other channels in the case of SD

kjnorman says, Yeah, It does not need to be dead space, as long at the content is appropriate for the source material, I would think most viewers would find this acceptable, if not advantageous.

Todd W says, ... or a live datacasr from MilwaukeeHDTV.org in the space ... :)

JIM HALL says, WE WILL BE TRYING SOME SIDE COLOR PANELS OUT SHORTLY SO PLEASE GIVE US THE FEED BACK.....

DMan says, Please....no Fox's 'The Tick' banner-behind-the-batter during World Series!!!

Gregg L says, Puce?

Todd W says, You know you can count on us for feedback, Jim !

Tom Snyder says, Shortly meaning tonight?

Gregg L says, Hey short in corporate terms is usually months, don't bug the man.

JIM HALL says, ANYONE HAVE ANOTHER SUBJECT...

Tom Snyder says, or in the case of HD... YEARS!

rnelson says, I was watching a James Bond Movie Saturday night on ABC (7-1) Chicago. It had a DD5.1 Audio… noticeable improvement over straight DD. Do you have equipment to broadcast in DD5.1 and when/how would it be turned on? I was watching a James Bond Movie Saturday night on ABC (7-1) Chicago. It had a DD5.1 Audio… noticeable improvement over straight DD. Do you have equipment to broadcast in DD5.1 and when/how would it be turned on?

kjnorman says, Can you discuss the cable subject?

kjnorman says, Current moves to get CBS58 on TW?

JIM HALL says, OKAY TWO SUBJECT.......ON AUDIO

len says, adjacent channel interference? (35 vs. 36, 46, vs 47 Madison???)

DMan says, will cable have CBS-HD?

Gregg L says, Here it would be 33, 34,35 and 36,,,,neat

JIM HALL says, THREE SUBJECTS......I HAVE THEM WRITTEN DOWN ....LETS START WITH CABLE

JIM HALL says, WE ARE HOPEFUL THAT IN THE NEAR FUTURE WE WILL HAVE OUR DTV SIGNAL ON TWC

DMan says, cool

JIM HALL says, I KNOW THE NEXT QUESTION IS WHEN ON TWC,.....I DO NOT HAVE AN ANSWER FOR THAT, BUT WE ARE TALKING ABOUT IT

JIM HALL says, IN THE MEANTIME, ENJOY IT OVER-THE-AIR

kjnorman says, I know you don't have a precise answer, but could we be talking summer time or 2003?

DMan says, The Masters on cable? :)

JeffByk says, Knowing what you know, would you invest $500 in an STB to get it now OTA or wait to get it thru TWC?

JIM HALL says, ON THE AUDIO.......WE PASS THROUGH WHAT THE NETWORK SENDS US......WE HAVE HAD SOME DISCUSSIONS WITH CBS ABOUT NEW DOLBY THAT WILL BE PRESENTED IN FALL

Todd W says, STB all the way.

len says, ditto

kjnorman says, I'll read between the lines and presume this means sometime in 2003 or later..

JIM HALL says, KJ.....ITS REALLY TOUGH TO SAY ON THE TIME FRAME FOR TWC AND CBS -HD

JeffByk says, then STB it is!

Gregg L says, I still waiting on TWC for Roadrunner commercial service....yeah

DMan says, Is there a manager we can write to request adding CBS-HD on cable? Any advice for us.

JIM HALL says, ALSO. CBS-HD ON DIRECT IS ALSO EVEN A LONGER WAY OFF UNLESS THEY FIND CHANNEL SPACE AND WE ARE NOT ABOUT TO LET THEM SQUASH OUR HD SIGNAL AND COMPRESS IT LIKE THEY DO OUR ANALOG

kjnorman says, Its a shame, a cable box is so much easier to sell to the wife than yet another expensive box to receive just 3 stations. You know, you would have many more viewers on cable...

JIM HALL says, KJ......WE AT TIMES ARE TRANSMITTING 4 PROGRAMS ON OUR DTV SIGNAL....

len says, your wife knew how to program the VCR before you did, don't blame her

Gregg L says, Yeah, and no snow on 41 here in Cedarburg receiving it on 1-2

kjnorman says, I accept that, but this concept of multicasting is foreign to many people - wife's included.

JIM HALL says, FOR TWC......WRITE TO THE MARKETING DEPARTMENT, BUT BE POLITE.....MORE BEES WITH HONEY......

JIM HALL says, HAVE ALL OF YOU CHECKED OUT OUR WEB SITE FOR HDTV PROGRAMMING

Todd W says, Yes !!! Thanks for the link !

Gregg L says, Yep

Kevin A says, Your the first in the market to do it!

JIM HALL says, IS IT USEFUL...EASY....CHANGES YOU WOULD LIKE TO SEE.....

Todd W says, Jim, perhaps a little presumptuous, but, is there a chance for a CBS58 facilities tour for group members ?

Gregg L says, How about a weekly e-mail to HD viewers...sorta like Fox's newsletter but just with the coming weeks HD programming

Kevin A says, Personally, I prefer grid format and then I could see 41's schedule at the same time. I like that station.

Todd W says, Ditto, Kevin.

JIM HALL says, GREGG WE JUST STARTED THAT TODAY.........AT LEAST ON THE PROGRAMMING FRONT......GO TO OUR WEB SITE AND SIGN UP FOR NEWS E-MAILS.....YOU WILL GET ONE EACH DAY AT 3:00PM

kjnorman says, Looking at it now I only see tomorrow listed. Can you expand this to include the up coming week?

Todd W says, I'm there on the e-mail !

Gregg L says, That's nice but daily is usually too late to plan, a weekly would be nicer and easier on your people wouldn't it?

JIM HALL says, WE ARE STILL WORKING ON ADDING WMLW TO THE DTV SCHEDULE UNDER CBS-58.COM....FOR WMLW GO TO ITS WEB SITE AND IT HAS ITS OWN SCHEDULE......WWW.WMLW.COM

DMan says, Will be nice to see CBS-HD on the TV's interactive programming guide too. Nice to plan 1 week ahead

JIM HALL says, YU SHOULD BE ABLE TO LOOK AT THE WHOLE WEEK AND BY TIME BY SELECTING THE RIGHT OPTIONS

len says, Hey Jim! Do you take a day off? And how is Kevin doing?

JIM HALL says, DMAN.....WE MAY BE ENDING THE PROGRAM GUIDE SHORTLY.....IT DOESN'T WORK THE WAY WE WANT IT TO AND WE ARE SHOPPING FOR A NEW ONE.

kjnorman says, Okay, perhaps I was looking at the wrong page..

JIM HALL says, THIS JOB IS 24X7, AND KEVIN IS DOING GREAT.....HE IS REALLY THE PERSON YOU SHOULD ALL THANK AS HE HAS BEEN THE WORKING DAY/NIGHT TO GET IT ON THE AIR

DMan says, Thanks for your efforts Jim. You're a pioneer, this is all new & we can't wait to see more.

Gregg L says, 24X7, 16X9, 3X4 all these numbers.....ouch

kjnorman says, I guess we had better let you go and get some rest then??

kjnorman says, Thank you for your time this evening.

JIM HALL says, ON THE TOUR......WE CAN SCHEDULE ONE IN THE COMING WEEKS......DAY OR NIGHT ?????

Todd W says, How about a weekend day ?

kjnorman says, Weekend day would be good!

JIM HALL says, OKAY, WE WILL SCHEDULE FOR A WEEKEND DAY IN MID-APRIL.....

kjnorman says, Preferably not April 3 to 13. I'll be in the UK....

kjnorman says, :)

Todd W says, That's great.

rnelson says, Great :)

Kevin A says, And free HDTV's to all participants

len says, 4/3 my birthday

Gregg L says, Oh God Monty we've already got one.

kjnorman says, LOL, how about a free stb!

Gregg L says, Free OTA fringe antennas, like Select TV tuned only for channel 46.

Kevin A says, That's not a bad idea

Todd W says, Jim, I'm still not getting guide info i.e.; program info. Any update ?

JIM HALL says, I WILL LOOK AT THE SCHEDULES TOMORROW AND WE WILL PLAN IN LATE APRIL......NO KEVIN A...NO FREE TV'S...IN FACT I WS GOING TO CHARGE SO WE CAN PAY FOR ALL THIS EQUIP.

JIM HALL says, TODD...WE HAD THE GUIDES ON TONIGHT......WHAT STB ARE YOU USING?

kjnorman says, Late April would be good. We can then laugh (sigh?) at how all the other stations will not be making their deadlines.

Gregg L says, Don't look for any money from me if after April 15th, the government will have all of mine..

kjnorman says, For May 1 I mean...

Todd W says, Panasonic TU-HDS20. Anything I need to do ?? Re-initialize ?

Gregg L says, Guides are working right now, 60minutes II and Munsters, the others are off air.

JIM HALL says, WE HAVE ONE OF THOSE BOXES AND WE CAN'T MAKE IT WORK EITHER...ANYONE WHO CAN HELP?

Todd W says, Hmmm. Not here.

Gregg L says, But of course there is not descriptions available, but I just go to DirecTV and look it up on 58 etc.. even though I don't get local stations the info is still there.

JIM HALL says, GREGG.....OUR DESCRIPTIONS ARE NOT WORKING...ONLY NAME AND TIME

Todd W says, I think that Steve Mann and I are the only ones in this group with the box.

Gregg L says, I realized that from earlier comments, I was just iterating that I always have the backup from DirecTV.

JIM HALL says, ANY OF YOU HAVE TWC DIGITAL

Tom Snyder says, I did for one day... picture sucked

JeffByk says, I have TWC Digital but still on waiting list for HDTV STB

JIM HALL says, I AM WONDERING HOW WMLW LOOKS AT 741

sarusk says, I do have TWC digital

sarusk says, haven't looked yet

JIM HALL says, ALSO WONDERING WHAT YOU ALL THOUGHT OF THE HDTV BROADCAST OF THE NCAA GAMES ON FRI & SUNDAY LAST WEEK

Todd W says, I was glued to it, Jim. Excellent coverage.

Tom Snyder says, Excellent!

rnelson says, The Picture of the Wisconsin Game was much better than the score.

JeffByk says, Just checked...741 looks as good as any other channel on TWC Digital

JeffByk says, I should say... as good as the best channels

JIM HALL says, THE NCAA BROADCASTS ON HDTV WAS PRETTY GOOD AND CERTAINLY BETTER THAN NTSC, BUT WE ARE GOING TO WORK ON STILL IMPROVING IT......THERE WERE SOME MOTION ARTIFACTS THAT HOPEFULLY CAN BE MADE TO BE BETTER

Todd W says, Would that be from your end or CBS' ?

JIM HALL says, ALSO, I HAVE NOTICED THAT IN TRUE HDTV BROADCASTS I HAVE MADE DIFFERENT PRE-SETS FOR VIEWING......

JIM HALL says, TODD...IT HASS TO BE ON BOTH ENDS.......

sarusk says, just checked 741 as well, it is about the same as other channels

Todd W says, Me too ... King Of Queens DOES look different than Raymond, for example.

JIM HALL says, I MAKE SURE THAT I HAVE MY NOISE REDUCTION TURNED OFF IN TRUE HD AND EVEN UPCONVERTED AND I TURN DOWN THE SHARPNESS ALMOST ALL THE WAY, ESPECIALLY IN TRUE HD

Todd W says, I figured CBS needed to be involved, Jim.

Tombo says, The commercial for CBS looks great. The one that advertises HD with CBS its all here. That commercial is how prime time should look.

JIM HALL says, CBS HAD PROBLEMS IN REPLAYS......I AM NOT SURE WHAT THEY WERE DOING OR USING.....

Todd W says, Ahhh ... indeed we had reruns last week.

JIM HALL says, TOMBO...THE PROMO LOOKS GOOD, BUT I HAVE TO DISAGREE WITH YOU ON THE LOOK.....I WOULD HATE TO WATCH A SITCOM IN HD VIDEO

Todd W says, I've said it before, nothing beats Leah Remini in HD.

JIM HALL says, CBS IS DOING IT RIGHT....THEY SHOOT THEIR SITCOMS & DRAMAS ON FILM AND THEN DO AN HD TRANSFER

rnelson says, How Long before we see David Letterman in HD?

Todd W says, Thanks, Roy. DITTO !

JIM HALL says, RNELSON....I ASKED THE SAME QUESTION OF CBS AND I DID NOT GET AN ANSWER, BUT WITH NBC AND LENO, I AM SURE ITS NOT FAR BEHIND, BUT......

Tombo says, Are you saying the content is so bad lets keep quality a little lower. I want the HD video even for sitcoms. Jim, film will be dead in 5 years.

JIM HALL says, TOMBO.....I RESPECTFULLY HAVE TO DISAGREE WITH YOU, FILM WILL NEVER BE DEAD AND VIDEO CAN NEVER REPLACE FILM.....THEY ARE TWO DIFFERENT MEDIUMS AND EACH HAS THEIR SPECIAL APPLICATIONS....

JIM HALL says, BACK TO LETTERMAN .....FOR THE NET TO DO DAVE IN HD THEY NEED TO RESIZE THE SET FOR 16X9....SO WHEN YOU HEAR OF A NEW SET BEING BUILT FOR DAVE....I THINK ITS SAFE TO SAY IT WILL THEN BE AVAILABLE IN HD

Todd W says, Is that feasible in the old theatre ?

rnelson says, Will they need a corporate sponsor like Sony did for Leno to make it complete?

JIM HALL says, IF THEY WERE GOING TO DO IT,......IT WOULD BE OVER THE SUMMER WHEN HE'S IN RE-RUNS

JIM HALL says, BACK TO THE FILM VS VIDEO ISSUE.......

Tombo says, It is already happening in consumer cameras and video recorders. Do you know anyone using film. Read this article. http://www.foveon.com/press_X3_business.html By the way, what is films advantage?

Todd W says, What about future HD from CBS ?? A hint of what to expect, perhaps ?

JIM HALL says, DID ANY OF YOU WATCH SUNDAY NIGHT'S MOVIE ON CBS-HD

rnelson says, Yes. Really nice.

Todd W says, :( DVD rental, sorry.

Tombo says, Was that the little house on the prairie thing. I watched it with my daughter?

JIM HALL says, TODD.....HOW COULD YOU........JUST KIDDING I RENT DVD'S TOO

Tom Snyder says, Sorry... "6 Feet Under" addict

Todd W says, :) Rush Hour 2 ... quite good, actually !

Tom Snyder says, Been waiting for HD " Touched By An Angel" forever! You're finally in HD, but it's being preempted by hoops :(

JIM HALL says, TOMBO.....WHAT DID YU THINK OF THE PICTURE QUALITY OF THE MOVIE......

Tombo says, It was fair to good. Again not as good as video. It is just too soft. Not much better than a DVD but I wont complain because I know film will die.

Todd W says, Jim, how about some help in getting a local sports bar to go HD for the Masters, even some ideas ??

Todd W says, We need to show HD to the masses !

Todd W says, I've been to (almost) every major sports bar in the Menomonee Falls area with no luck ! (Well, food and drink aside !)

JIM HALL says, TOMBO....I AGREE WITH YOU ON THE CONSUMER SIDE OF THINGS WITH VIDEO, BECAUSE ITS EASY AND INEXPENSIVE TO USE, .....FILMS ADVANTAGE IS IN LIGHTING...NO WAY THAT VIDEO CAN EVER SHOOT A SCENE IN LOW LIGHT LIKE FILM AND GIVE YOU THE SAME EFFECT.. ....WHEN CSI IS BACK ON WATCH IT AND YOU WILL SEE WHAT I MEAN. TOMBO I AM SURE YOU ARE A VIDEO GUY AND VIDEO IS GREAT FOR SPORTS, NO ARGUMENT THERE

Tom Snyder says, Problem is that even a sports bar has just a tiny segment of the population...

JIM HALL says, CHAMMPS IS PUTTING IN PLASMA SCREENS

Todd W says, Really ??? Greenfield or Brookfield ?

rnelson says, I guess that's going to raise the price of my Friday night fish fry.

Todd W says, A very good friend of mine is the general contractor that builds Champps buildings.

JIM HALL says, I THINK ITS GREENFIELD.......

Kevin A says, Any clue as to NFL telecasts going HD?

JIM HALL says, I BELIEVE A GAME OF THE WEEK WILL BE IN HD, BUT DO NOT HOLD ME TO THAT. ALSO IT MAY NOT BE THE MAIN GAME OR SAME GAME AS SHOWN ON CBS-58

Tombo says, The big key for consumers is the 8VSB receiver or Cable carrying the HD. Next year will be the explosion when the receivers show up at $150. How many of you know people with the HD set but no receiver. I know quite a few. Its hard to come up with that $600 .

Todd W says, Ditto, Tombo. I do too.

JeffByk says, hey, that's me!

JIM HALL says, OUR INDUSTRY IS PARTIALY TO BLAME FOR THE HDTV READY SETS WITH NO TUNERS.....THE FCC AND ATSC HAD A EVER HARD TIME ON SETTING ON A FORMAT

JIM HALL says, WITHOUT A FORMAT THE MANUFACTURES DID NOT SET UP THEIR LINES IN THE PLANTS SO NOT TUNERS

JIM HALL says, WHAT YOU ARE GOING TO SEE IS STB'S THAT ARE CHEAP.....

Kevin A says, FCC should mandated tuners in all sets. They have a precedent with the closed caption and v chip. They forced the broadcasters, now get the manuf. up to speed.

JIM HALL says, KEVIN.....YOU ARE RIGHT AND I WAS IN WASHINGTON 4 WEEKS AGO REQUESTING OUR SENATORS AND REPS TO MAKE THIS A REG FOR NEW SETS BEING BUILT ON SOLD IN THE US.

Todd W says, What's your stance, Jim, on the copy protection issue, DVI, etc.

JIM HALL says, COPYRIGHT ISSUES ARE VERY COMPLEX AND THERE IS ALWAYS TWO SIDES OR THIS CASE MULTI-SIDES TO THE ISSUE, BUT.......

Tombo says, Actually things are moving pretty well. This year stations get up and work out their problems and get use to working with the digital stuff. Next year due the price on ATSC tuners drops due to new consolidated chipsets and consumers get on board. There is an advantage to digital that goes beyond HD. Sound quality for one. Analog noise for another

JIM HALL says, FOR CONSUMERS, LIKE THE VHS TAPE RECORDING.....THEY SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO RECORD FOR THEIR OWN USE......THE PROBLEM IS IN THE DIGITAL ERA...ITS VERY EASY TO COPY WITH PERFECTION........IN FACT I BELIEVE THAT SOFTWARE IS AVAILABLE TO RECORD AN OTA ONTO YOUR HARD DRIVE IN THE DIGITAL FORMAT.

Todd W says, Yep. It's out there, Jim.

Todd W says, People that have the HiPix Card are doing it now.

JIM HALL says, TOMBO...I AGREE, BUT WHO'S GOING TO PAY US TO BROADCAST IN HDTV.......ITS A LONG WAY FORM BEING THE NORM.....WE ARE BROADCASTERS, BUT TODAY WE ARE NARROWCASTING AND WE CANNOT MAKE EVEN ENOUGH REVENUE TO PAY THE POWER BILL

JIM HALL says, SO EDUCATE ME TODD,......PEOPLE COULD RECORD THIS ON THEIR HARD DR. AND THEN COPY IT TO CD AND SELL COPIES...????

JIM HALL says, NOT TO MENTION EDITING OUT THE COMMERCIALS

Kevin A says, Replay TV already does that

Todd W says, Sure. It's easily done. Adobe Premiere is affordable.

Kevin A says, But not in HD. Same as going to bathroom during comml.

Todd W says, We write it to an MPEG stream, bring it in to Premiere, edit and burn to DVD. No prob.

Tombo says, Nobody will pay you for the next few years. But you have to or you lose your license. There is another investor waiting behind you to take your bandwidth and use it for another business. It might turn out that broadcast Television dies. Who knows.

Todd W says, Well, actually, Kevin, with the HiPix card you can record HD streams.

Todd W says, I can't afford a HiPix card, though ... :(

JIM HALL says, THE VIDEO TAPE AT BLOCKBUSTER AND DVD'S WERE SUPPOSE TO KILL TV JUST LIKE TV WAS TO KILL RADIO.....IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN, BUT TO COULD CHANGE AS WE KNOW IT TODAY

JIM HALL says, DO YOU GUYS KNOW THAT FUTURE TUNERS FOR OTA WILL HAVE YOU LOG IN YOUR ZIP CODE....ANY IDEAS AS TO WHY?

Todd W says, Guide data.

JIM HALL says, NOPE

Kevin A says, To permit you only to receive your market channels

JIM HALL says, NOPE...BUT I LIKE THAT IDEA

Kevin A says, Naughty

Tombo says, It picks up the right commercial for your location

JIM HALL says, TOMBO ...THAT'S IT!!!!!!

JIM HALL says, PLUS...WE WILL DO A NEWS WEATHER CAST FOR YOUR AREA

Kevin A says, Production costs will eat you up for that

Todd W says, Like that !

Kevin A says, Unless you can use computer generated weather and news casters :)

JIM HALL says, KEVIN...YOU ARE RIGHT NOT TO MENTION THE NUMBER OF DIFFERENT FILE SERVERS WE WILL NEED TO PLAY THE RIGHT COMMERCIAL TO THE RIGHT AREA......

JIM HALL says, KEVIN.....THEY HAVE DEMOED. THAT TOO

Kevin A says, Oh great. Are most of your comml on disk or tape.

Todd W says, How specific will you be ? Does that mean that I'll see that the Menomonee Falls Pick 'n Save will be giving out free eggs this week ??

JIM HALL says, KEVIN...ON DISK PLAYING HAVE HARD DRIVES.....

JIM HALL says, YES TODD...IT COULD BE

Kevin A says, On your news replays are those disk drive or tape. I imagine you could program a whole broadcast day in a couple hours

Todd W says, No kidding, wow. That's neat. You'll like this Jim, but I really don't mind advertising.

Todd W says, I'm typically happy to submit personal info to get targeted ads.

JIM HALL says, KEVIN....IN LONG FORMAT REPLAYS OF NEWS AND OTHER SYNDICATED SHOWS IE JUST SHOOT ME....WE USE TAPE....

Kevin A says, Somewhat unrelated question. WEB FN telecasts are somewhat jittery and almost like web cam. Comment?

JIM HALL says, THE FUTURE COULD BE THAT YOU PAY TO WATCH TV WITHOUT CM'S AND ITS FREE OR THEY PAY YOU TO WATCH CMS'.......THEY HAVE DEVICES CALLED PEOPLE METERS THAT THEY ARE TRYING TO MONITOR WHAT PEOPLE ARE IN THE ROOM AT ALL TIMES.

JIM HALL says, GOOD EYES KEVIN........LET ME EXPLAIN

Todd W says, Sign me up for the People Meter !

JIM HALL says, THE FEED FOR WEBFN COMES FROM OUR CHICAGO STUDIOS ON A T-1 LINE......ALSO THEY FEEDS FROM AROUND THE COUNTRY AND WORLD COME IN ON T-1'S...SO THE VIDEO IS NOT LIKE A FEED VIA SATELLITE, BUT ITS EVER COST EFFECTIVE, THE DOWNSIDE IS THE QUALITY VS SATELLITE.

Todd W says, Is the source feed video and then compressed onto T-1, Jim ?

Kevin A says, We play 41 all day in our break room at our clinic. Got to keep up with the DOW. So I get quite an eyeful of it during the day. Including those goofy Family Feud commls.

JIM HALL says, TODD.....YES. WE ARE HOPING THAT WITH BETTER ENCODING TECHNOLOGY IT WILL IMPROVE

JIM HALL says, ITS JUST ABOUT TIME FOR EITHER DAVE OR JAY.....ANY LAST QUESTIONS.

Todd W says, It's coming. I'm looking for that same thing for presentations I need to make.

Kevin A says, Thanks again for an interesting evening. We'll have to discuss that tour. Sounds interesting. Good night

Todd W says, Indeed. Looking forward to meeting you in person, Jim and getting the tour !

JIM HALL says, THANKS EVERYONE AND THANKS FOR WATCHING CBS-58 TV & DT
