The post about DIRECTV I hoped I'd never have to write. Long-time members here know what a DTV fanboy I've been. This is so sad.

As a customer since 1999, I couldn't wait to get my Genie/wireless setup back after 3 months of Spectrum in our temporary apartment while we built a new home. With a move-in date of Dec 22nd, I scheduled my install a week ahead just in case we ran into problems with our wooded lot.

Tech guy arrived on time. We walked the lot to determine dish placement, and decided on a pole mount just to right on the front porch so I could brush the snow off the dish. Technician confirmed view of the SW sky, scheduled digger's hotline to make sure the site was clear, and scheduled my install for Thursday. Day before move-in, so everything appearing to work out perfectly.

Thursday, the tech arrived, looked at the site and said there's no way the dish could see the satellite from there. We walked the lot and I showed him all the other locations the previous tech also told me would work. This tech said none of them would work. I showed him a spot that had a clear view of the entire southern sky from east to west. He said he was worried about the length of the cable run, so he requested a "Second Opinion" from a supervisor. He had me confirm that with someone on the phone. Thinking supervisor is on the way, install can still happen on moving day, and we'll be good to go.

3 days, and phone calls that had me talking to at least 10 different ATT/DirecTV CSRs and supervisors later... I'm watching locals with my antenna, and streaming what I can from my phone. Despite two supervisors assuring me they'd take personal responsibility and would call me back within two hours with the plan to resolve it, as of 4 O'clock yesterday I still had no idea when/if I'd be installed.

Every time I called..or was escalated to a supervisor, the person I'd speak to had absolutely no information about my situation. Last night I finally got escalated high enough to talk to someone who had record of everything. He apologized for my frustration, but the best we could do is schedule another install tech for this Thursday, with no assurance that I'll even be able to get DirecTV. He said he'd be emailing the local supervisor to fill him in on my situation. I asked him to have the person receiving that email call me to confirm and discuss. He said he'd request that, but it was unlikely I'd get a call.

They've already taken my payment out of my account, offered me free HBO if I can get installed, made some suggestions that I could qualify for some mysterious cloud-based streaming solutions that may, or may not, have DVR capabilities.

A Facebook post cannot express the comedy/tragedy/customer service fail that occurred with every single touchpoint over the past week. I have never had a more maddening experience with a company/brand in my adult life. It's amazing to me that after 18 years as a customer and advocate, they could not be doing more to lose me if they were trying.

It will be a shame if they give me no choice but to switch to Spectrum, an option that I loathe, especially if, had I made that decision two weeks ago when they came to install my internet, I'd have had my TV/Theatre setup before the move in, rather than sitting in limbo.

To be continued....

On/Off Topic Chit-Chat / DirecTV Multi-room Oddity
Saturday Oct 06, 2012, 03:39:14 PM
Odd. I have 2 Directv receivers in 2 different rooms. Had the same cable news channel channel on both, when a commercial break came on. One receiver aired a commercial for a medical alert bracelet, and the other had a commercial for DirecTV. When the break ended both boxes went back to the same show.

General (Non-HDTV) Milwaukee TV / Tim Cuprisin 1958 - 2011
Wednesday Nov 23, 2011, 01:46:06 PM
Tim died of Melanoma today.

Over the years, we had a sometimes adversarial relationship. But recently Tim and I had overcome our differences and had become Twitter friends. Discovered we had lots in common.

Just saw him a few months ago when Susan Kim and Vince Vitrano invited me in to the studio at TMJ4 to tape a pilot for show they they were thinking of doing. I was surprised to find that Tim was the other guest. We had a great exchange on the show, and after it was done, we stood in the parking lot and yakked for awhile like old friends. Great last memory.

On/Off Topic Chit-Chat / Sony, what were you thinking?
Sunday Jun 26, 2011, 12:53:49 PM
Today is garage cleanup day, forcing me to finally get around to getting my garage speakers hooked up to an upgraded stereo I got last year so I have tunes out there. Entire rest of the house, and the deck, and front porch speakers are on "Speakers A," Garage is "Speakers B."

Surprise: this stereo (which is just a newer model of the one I used to have) allows A or B, but not both.

Sony, I hate you. :bang:

Crud. Watching TV tonight and all of a sudden the picture on the 4 year old 46 in. Samsung LCD in the living room just disappeared. No menu items, either. Just a faint glow. Unplugged it for a while, and still nothing. Lightning hit earlier today the culprit? Don't know... all I do know is that I thought I was done with major purchases around here.

Milwaukee HDTV Programming / WISN 12 Weather crawler
Sunday Apr 10, 2011, 09:24:28 PM
Not sure if it's just because it's Fond Du Lac, but the tornado watch graphic and crawler is being used sparingly tonight. Nice to have weather watches in effect and still have full HD and only occasional interruptions for a minute or so.

We'll see what happens when there are warnings in Milwaukee or Waukesha county.

But, for now: Kudos!

On/Off Topic Chit-Chat / A little Home Theater Audio help
Monday Jan 31, 2011, 05:09:30 PM
I have a friend who is unhappy with the audio of his home theater. He has all the gear to have killer sound, but it's just not doing it for him. Are there any local audio experts who, for a reasonable rate can come and check the wiring, fine tune the settings and optimize the speaker placement for optimal sound?

I had DirecTV come out and do a whole-home DVR install yesterday. Install went without a hitch. Tech guy got here at the beginning of the promised window, and took 1hr and 45 minutes (exactly as DirecTV said it would).  I have 2 DVRS and it's pretty cool now to be able record 4 channels at the same, viewable on any of the 3 boxes in the house.

They had to swap out the non-dvr box downstairs in the home theatre with a newer model. Navigating the menu on that box is smoking fast... but the navigation on the other old DVRs is noticeably slower. With several series previously being recorded on both boxes now only needing to be recorded on one, I have a lot more space now.

Process required replacing the switch with a new one, and adding a new inline adapters. I did have to disconnect my wireless internet connection on my living room DVR (he could have kept it, but would have had to do a convoluted set up to accomplish it, and I use on-demand so infrequently that it wasn't worth the hassle).

Service call was $150 (although loyal longterm DTV customers may be able to get $99 of that waived).
